Small EC3 reminder that catches people: the yield strength of S355 is not always 355 MPa.
EN 10025-2 drops it to 345 MPa once the plate or flange is thicker than 16 mm, and further again above 40 mm. Heavy HE sections and thick end plates are exactly where this bites. #eurocode3 #steeldesign

Is that why some calculations use 345 for the flange but 355 for the web of the same section?

Exactly. The flange is thicker, so it can fall into the next thickness band while the thinner web stays at 355. Many designers simply use the lower value for the whole section.

Easy to miss when the section is picked from a table and the plate thickness never gets looked at.
