Reading a building's forces
Once you learn to look, a well-resolved structure is legible. The form tells you where the forces are and where they are going:
- A pointed arch is steeper than a round one because it carries its thrust more vertically, reducing the outward push the walls have to resist - the shape is a direct answer to a force problem.
- A tapering column is thick where the load and bending are greatest and slim where they are not - the profile traces the demand along its height.
- A thickened haunch where a beam meets a column is exactly where the bending moment peaks - the structure swells to meet the force.
Each of these is a structural decision made visible. When form and force agree, the building feels inevitable - as if it could not have been shaped any other way.
That feeling of inevitability is the signature of structural architecture done well. Nothing looks arbitrary because nothing is; every curve and thickening is the load path made physical.

There is a long tradition of beauty through applied ornament, and it can be genuinely lovely. But structural expression offers something different:

It is the satisfaction of honesty - a building that shows you, truthfully, how it works, with nothing concealed and nothing faked. The Gothic cathedral and the modern gridshell are centuries apart in technology but share this: their drama comes from the structure itself, not from decoration laid over it. Why it only happens through collaboration
This kind of architecture cannot be retrofitted. You cannot design a fixed shape and then ask an engineer to make it stand up while preserving the look - by then the shape and the forces are already at odds, and the structure ends up either hidden or fighting the form.
This only happens when architect and engineer design together from the first sketch - not when structure is bolted on afterwards to a fixed shape.
Form-follows-force is necessarily a shared authorship. The geometry that carries load elegantly has to be found jointly, with the structural logic shaping the architectural idea and the architectural intent steering the structural form, from the very beginning.

- Pursue legibility, not decoration. The beauty is in the structure being readable and true, not in ornament added on top.
- Design it jointly from the start. Form-follows-force is impossible to bolt on later; it requires architect and engineer working as one from the first sketch.
