James Okoro is a geotechnical engineer specialising in foundations, retaining structures and soil-structure interaction on the kind of challenging, variable ground that makes textbook assumptions nervous. He has logged boreholes in the heat, supervised piling rigs through the rainy season, and back-analysed more than one unexpected settlement across West Africa, and through all of it he has remained happiest doing the thing he does best: turning raw SPT and CPT data into a safe, economical, buildable foundation.
He studied civil engineering in Lagos and geotechnics at postgraduate level in the UK, and the contrast between the two settings taught him an early and lasting lesson - that geotechnical design travels far less well than structural design. A factor that is conservative in one country's stiff clays can be reckless in another's collapsible soils, and a foundation that works beautifully in a lecture can fail quietly in ground that never read the lecture. He returned home determined to practise geotechnics that respected the actual ground beneath his feet.
His firm conviction is that geotechnics is where the most expensive surprises in construction live, precisely because so much of it is invisible until the moment it moves. A bearing-capacity figure copied from a previous job without understanding; a water table assumed rather than measured; a raft modelled as infinitely stiff when it is anything but - each is an assumption quietly buried in a report, and James has spent enough of his career digging those assumptions back up, usually under pressure, to treat every one of them with real respect.
He is fascinated by the conversation between the soil and the structure, which he believes too many engineers conduct as a monologue. The structural engineer hands down a load and demands a settlement; the geotechnical engineer hands up a stiffness and a capacity; and somewhere in between, the two models are supposed to agree about a reality neither can see directly. Making that conversation honest - getting the structural model and the ground model to tell the same story - is the work he finds most satisfying and most often neglected.
