Exposure class XC3 - concrete inside buildings with moderate humidity, or external concrete sheltered from rain - is one of the most common classes in everyday design, and one of the most quietly mis-specified. The mistake is almost always the same: treating the strength grade as the durability requirement, when it is only one of three levers that have to agree.
What XC3 is actually guarding against
The XC family covers carbonation-induced corrosion. Atmospheric carbon dioxide slowly penetrates the concrete, neutralising its natural alkalinity. When that carbonation front reaches the reinforcement, the steel loses its passive protection and can corrode. XC3 is the moderate-humidity case - damp enough to support corrosion once carbonation arrives, dry enough that carbonation proceeds steadily. The whole durability strategy is about keeping the carbonation front away from the bars for the design life.
The three levers
EC2 controls this through three interacting requirements, not one:
- Minimum cover for the exposure class and design life. Cover is the physical distance the carbonation front has to travel before it reaches steel - the primary line of defence.
- Maximum water/cement ratio, which controls the permeability of the cover concrete. A lower w/c gives a denser paste that carbonates more slowly.
- Minimum strength class, which acts largely as a proxy for the w/c ratio and cement content - a convenient, testable stand-in for the permeability you cannot easily measure on site.
Specifying a higher grade does not buy durability if the cover is wrong. Cover is the first line of defence, and no amount of extra strength compensates for steel that sits too close to the surface.
Why they have to agree
The three levers are a set, not a menu. A high strength grade with skimpy cover still carbonates to the bar quickly, because the distance is short. Generous cover with a porous, high-w/c mix lets the front advance fast through the cover it does have. The durability only works when the grade, the w/c limit and the cover all tell the same story - each chosen for XC3 and a stated design life, not borrowed from a strength calculation that never considered exposure.
Specifying it without slipping up
- Start from the exposure class and design life, then read all three requirements together - do not let the structural strength grade silently set the durability grade.
- Protect the cover on site. The specified cover only helps if it is actually achieved; spacers, fixing and inspection matter as much as the number on the drawing. Cover routinely ends up less than specified, and that is where carbonation problems begin.
- Cross-check the cement type. Some cement combinations carbonate differently, which can shift the w/c and cover that deliver the same protection.
The EC2 durability tables in the standards reference give the cover, w/c and strength minima per exposure class. Use them as a set: the grade is the easy number to write down, but the cover is the one that actually keeps the steel safe.
